Outdoor Research was founded in 1981 by Ron Gregg, a nuclear physicist and passionate mountaineer who turned his experience of gear failure on a Denali expedition into a drive to make better outdoor equipment. The company’s first product was the X-Gaiter, and it grew into a brand known for functional, high-quality outdoor gear designed to help people explore safely and comfortably.
The brand continues its legacy of innovation, with products still made in the U.S. (Seattle and California), emphasising close manufacturing oversight. In addition to performance, Outdoor Research focuses on sustainability, including setting greenhouse gas reduction targets, transitioning to PFAS-free materials in new products, and working with certification partners like bluesign® and the Responsible Down Standard (RDS) to reduce environmental impact.
