As much fun as it often is, Earth Day can be a reminder of how much more there is to do.

We learned that lesson back in 1969 when a massive oil spill off the coast of Santa Barbara brought a host of environmental groups together around a common cause. This event, preceded by a growing groundswell of concern about pollution, was the catalyst for the first Earth Day on April 22, 1970.
Passage of the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act and establishment of the Environmental Protection Agency soon followed—testaments to the awesome power of protest, rallies and grassroots movements.

Showing up and speaking out with our communities reminds us of how we’re part of something bigger, and how small actions can bring planet-sized change. If we’re doing it right, it can even be fun, too.
