Magicians have the best toys. From decks to sponge balls to coins, the tools of our trade are uniquely fun. So when a trick like Blow Hard comes out, reinventing a classic toy, it was too fun to pass up.
Ryan Plunkett's new effect takes childlike wonder, distills it, and just for good measure, teaches it how to fly.
Blow Hard takes the classic "floating ball game" and builds a routine of pure wonder around it. You start with a wooden tube that you blow into, making a Styrofoam ball float. This isn't magic, though. It's a basic lesson in air pressure.
Things get magical when you drop the ball and show that it is heavy. It lands with a THUD, showing it weighed far too much to be suspended on your breath.
What makes this really memorable though, is the ending, where you grab the ball, and it it against a glass. The "ball" cracks, showing that it has changed into an egg. Pour the yolk into the glass as the audience cheers.
In an era where magicians take their art more seriously than ever, Plunkett is not afraid to get silly, and the world is better off for it!
