A trick so good, they stop paying attention
The second best thing a magic trick can be is memorable. Think about it, you work living rent-free in the minds of your spectators. But you know what's better than that? Being indescribable. Your spectator may try in vain to explain what happened to them, but ultimately what they saw was so magical that it defies traditional explanation. All they can say is "you have to see it for yourself."
Tobias Dostal is the undisputed champion of the indescribable, and nothing he's ever created hits harder than Repo: A Chain of Unusual Events.
You'll start with a single key. That key can be used to unlock the door to a universe completely outside your spectator's understanding of reality.
Take the key and insert into thin air, and turn ever so slightly. Suddenly a silver chain falls from the imaginary cabinet and lands in your hands. Hopefully you're quick enough on your feet to dodge the jaws of your audience as they hit the ground. You pass solid through solid as the key now dangles from the chain.
What happens next will live on in their minds in snippets. You link and unlink the chain and key at will. The key disappears then reappears. The chain does the same. Repo is closer to a carefully choreographed dance than it is to a traditional magic trick.
Finally, with an empty chain wrapped on your spectators wrist, you vanish they key and have it reappear linked to the chain. Your spectator feels the moment when the key materializes as its weight mixes with that of the chain.
Best of all, the gimmicks are going to take on the lion's share of the work. You'll have to practice a little, but it's ridiculously easy compared to other tricks that get this type of reaction.
Repo is available at any Murphy's Magic dealer, or you can check out with our featured dealer, SoCal Playing Cards!
