A Closer Grand Canyon, 1998
In 1998, David Hockney travelled to the Grand Canyon to draw it from observation. Working daily for a week at Powell Point on the South Rim, he drew numerous studies in oil pastel, capturing the wild landscape from sunrise, and the movement of light and shadow around the terrain throughout the day.
To convey the colossal size of the geologic wonder, once he arrived back in his studio, he painted A Closer Grand Canyon across 60 canvases. Find out more about this exhibition poster featuring Hockney’s panoramic masterpiece.
