Tokusatsu (which translates to 'special filming') refers to Japanese live-action films or shows that make heavy use of practical special effects. The term is credited to special effects director Eiji Tsuburaya, a revolutionary person in the film industry and co-creator of some of the most popular tokusatsu series.
Tokusatsu mainly refers to science fiction, superhero, fantasy, or horror media. The most popular series include Godzilla, Ultraman, Kamen Rider, and Super Sentai (which is the source material for the American show "Power Rangers"). A very popular genre in Japan, tokusatsu series have gotten a wide variety of hobby products including action figures, model kits, toys, and vinyl figures!
