2021 marked an important year for the Pokémon franchise. It was the 25th anniversary of the release of the Pokémon Red and Green games in Japan, as well as the 26th anniversary of the founding of Creatures Inc., an affiliate of The Pokémon Company. The Armenian-born artist Hovsep Pushman, who settled in New York in 1919, established the standard for Orientalist still-life and figure painting during the 1920s through the 1940s. His paintings, like this circa-1940 work, typically include a wide range of Asian objects glowing duskily, as if illuminated by candlelight.
