Dear Greetings,
We are thrilled to be offering Sophisticated Palate: Fine & Decorative Arts from the Collection of Frederick H. Schrader, Napa Valley Signature Auction on April 17. Among the paintings are a number of exceptional works depicting scenes of Venice,
Italy, with its timeless allure, shimmering canals, domed basilicas, and ornate palazzi, which has inspired artists for generations. While celebrated figures like Canaletto and Turner often dominate the spotlight, many accomplished painters of the 19th and early 20th centuries also created stunning Venetian scenes, and a strong selection is now available in this auction. Works by artists such as Karl Kaufmann,
Jacques Guiaud, and
Antonio María de Reyna Manescau offer vivid, romantic interpretations of the city and have earned places in distinguished art collections across Europe and the United States.
Many works by these artists hang in museums throughout the world. Karl Kaufmann’s precision and atmosphere can be found at the Russell-Cotes Art Gallery in the UK and in historical collections like the Historic Waco Foundation in Texas. French painter Jacques Guiaud (often recorded as "J. Guiard") is represented in several French museums, including the Château de Compiègne and the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Rennes, which hold moody renderings of St. Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace. A drawing of Venice by Charles-Clement Calderon is preserved at the Musée Antoine Vivenel, while Amédée Rosier’s views—ranging from sunlit to nocturnal—are housed in institutions like the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter and
museums in Reims and Carcassonne, France.
Spanish-Italian painter Antonio María de Reyna Manescau is particularly well represented in the Schrader collection. His finely detailed Venice scenes are found in the Museo Carmen Thyssen Málaga, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and even the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. These works are celebrated for their glowing light, delicate architecture, and romantic idealization of the city’s waterways.
All of these offerings by skilled artists offer a rich and diverse view of Venice through the centuries. Their works not only celebrate the city’s charm but also reflect a deep and enduring fascination with its light, mystery, and grandeur. Here’s an opportunity to bring Venice with all of its beauty into your home.
