Dear Greetings,
We are pleased to announce that Seth W. Armitage has joined our Fine Art Department as Co-Director and Senior Specialist of European Art. Seth will be based in Heritage's New York City offices at 445 Park Ave. and working closely with Co-Director Marianne Berardi, PhD and the European Art team.
A Certified Member of the Appraisers Association of America, Armitage brings more than 20 years of direct auction experience to Heritage, most notably from his leadership roles at Sotheby's where he served as Vice President, Senior Specialist and Co-Head of the 19th Century European Art Department. There, he was instrumental in curating and selling auctions that achieved record-breaking results and tended to capture the majority market share in his category. Among his most celebrated accomplishments: Armitage has led the rediscovery and sale of several previously unattributed or lost works by major 19th-century artists, resulting in exceptional returns at auction.
Known for his deep subject matter expertise and clear, empathetic advisory style, Seth is also available to provide USPAP-compliant appraisals and strategic guidance for collectors, institutions and estates. He earned his Master's degree in Art History from the University of Chicago with a focus on American and French 19th-century art; and holds a Bachelor's degree with departmental honors from Vassar College.
Seth is readily available to answer questions about our upcoming, expansive June 5 auction featuring a superb collection of drawings by some of history's greatest draftsman from the private collection of William A. Glaser. A highlight among the 97 works offered in this event is Francesco Fontebasso's stunning Fall of the Rebel Angels, c. 1736, a virtuoso composition of cascading bodies by this gifted and prolific draftsman of the late Baroque. Other notable artists from the collection include
Annibale Carracci,
Pietro Faccini, Jacques de Gheyn III, Jan van Goyen, Stradanus,
Edward Lear, Jean-Louis Ernest Meissonier, James-Jacques Tissot,
Max Beckmann and many more. This season's auction also has an exceptional range of paintings, notably works by five members of the enormously talented Pissarro family, a vibrant Félix Vallotton landscape, as well as serene and intimate works by French realist
Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot. The event also features several noteworthy Old Master paintings, including
Saint Peter and Saint Louis, an egg tempera and gold leaf panel by Spanish artist Pere Vall from the early 15thcentury and a rare 1732 history painting by Jean-Etienne Liotard.
Seth is also seeking top-quality consignments of 19th-century European art for our Fall season. Please don't hesitate to reach out to him at 212-486-3685 or SethA@HA.com.
Sincerely yours,
