The Hechinger Collection, assembled by hardware-industry pioneer John Hechinger Sr., celebrates the artistry of everyday tools and the spirit of creativity that unites labor and art. In the late 1970s, after realizing the blank walls of his company's new headquarters did little to inspire innovation, Hechinger began filling the space with art. Eventually growing to a collection of nearly 400 works by artists such as Jim Dine,
Claes Oldenburg,
Jacob Lawrence and Arman,
each piece transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary. On January 28, we present the remarkable assemblage in Tools at Play: The Hechinger Collection Modern & Contemporary Art Showcase Auction.

For an anonymous artist, Banksy has become almost impossible to ignore. Emerging from the Bristol underground and based in England, he has built an international reputation for a sharply satirical brand of street art, most often realized through stenciling. Banksy's images have become some of the most iconic of the 21st century, and his prints have become essential works within many contemporary collections. In our January 29 In Focus: Banksy
auction, we spotlight the best of the sought-after artist. The tightly assembled selection features some of Banksy's most recognizable images, including
Girl with Balloon, Love is in the Air
, Laugh Now, Flying Copper and
Barcode.

First gaining widespread attention in the late 1980s, Shepard Fairey drew from street art, activism and popular culture to establish his distinctive visual language. A leading contemporary artist and graphic designer, Fairey achieved global recognition with his 2008 Obama HOPE poster, an image that became one of the most enduring symbols of that election cycle. Characterized by bold color, graphic patterning and layered imagery, his work frequently addresses themes of power, politics and social responsibility, all of which are on display in our February 3
In Focus: Shepard Fairey auction. Look for highlights such as
May Day Flag, Rose Soldier,
Yellow Mandala and Visual Disobedience

As a photographer who began collecting long before photography was widely embraced as a fine art, Abe Frajndlich assembled works guided by admiration rather than market considerations, resulting in a collection of unusual intimacy and insight. On February 18, his deeply personal collecting journey, which was shaped by decades of close relationships with many of photography's most important artists, comes into focus in Photographs from The Abe Frajndlich Collection: A Photographer Collects Showcase Auction.
The sale features exceptional photographs by Minor White - Frajndlich's mentor and lasting influence - as well as beautifully printed works by
Ilse Bing, printed by Frajndlich directly from her original negatives. The auction also reflects a lifetime of artistic exchange, including postcard gelatin silver prints with letters on the reverse from
Lotte Jacobi, and numerous gifted prints from
Barbara Klemm.

Website Tips: Bid Protection
|
Bid Protection allows you to ensure you are not outbid by automatically increasing your bid to the next full increment if you are outbid during the live event. This protects you from being "sniped" by a single increment. Bid Protection can be entered on all items except the current lot and the next upcoming lot in a Live Auction.
Note: The extra increment won't be placed until the item is up for live bidding, so it is possible that you could be outbid by a bid placed prior to live bidding, such as another proxy bid, live proxy bid, mail bid, etc., which could result in your losing the lot by that one increment. For the same reason, it is also possible that a currently losing bid with bid protection placed could potentially win the lot once the lot is subject to live bidding and the Bid Protection increment(s) is placed.

A frenzy of eager bidding drove an extraordinary 1804 Class III Draped Bust Dollar PR58 PCGS, BB-306, R.7 from The Presidio Collection to $3,538,000 to lead Heritage's Jan. 14–17
FUN US Coins Signature® Auction, in which numerous auction records were set, to $54,272,176.
That figure includes Heritage's $7,174,036
FUN Special Sessions:
Ellsworth & Jacobson, and when added to the $9,114,701 FUN U.S. Currency Signature® Auction, boosted the combined total to $63,386,877.
The Adams-Carter specimen that was the auction's top lot is one of just 16 known examples of the 1804 silver dollar, one of just seven Class III examples and one of four Class III coins not housed in a museum collection.
"Trophies like the famous 1804 dollars are always coveted by collectors, and the prices Heritage has been delivering for such numismatic treasures continue to surpass expectations," says Todd Imhof, Executive Vice President of Heritage Auctions. "This result is a significant jump since its last appearance at Heritage in 2009, when it sold
for $2.3 million."
The auction included Part I of The Presidio Collection, which features an enhanced type set of U.S. coins based on condition and rarity and includes several coins that are listed in the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins book. Heritage will offer Part II of the Presidio Collection in its
CSNS Auction April 29–May 3.
