On September 9, we are proud to present The Artful Eye: The Collection from the Estates of Larry Saphire and Marie-Madeleine Saphire. André Masson,

edited and translated into French by his first wife, Marie-Madeleine Saphire. He also published Judgements by Roberto Matta and two illustrated poetry books - one by Masson and another, Sea Bird Saga, by Wallace Putnam. With our September 25 auction Seven Treasures: Japanese Cloisonné from the Collection of Michael Barrett, we present a curated collection of Japanese and Chinese cloisonné from the celebrated New York club owner best remembered for the legendary China Club. Beyond his role as an impresario, Barrett had a discerning eye for art and design, with a particular passion for Japanese cloisonné, in which delicate metal wires define compartments that are filled with enamel pastes, then fired to achieve jewel-like surfaces. From the mid-19th
century onward, Japanese artisans perfected this technique, producing objects admired at world expositions and collected across Europe and America. The pieces in Barrett's collection exemplify this golden age.

   | Website Tips: Bid Protection |

   |

   |
Bid Protection allows you to ensure you are not outbid by automatically increasing your bid to the next full increment if you are outbid during the live event. This protects you from being "sniped" by a single increment. Bid Protection can be entered on all items except the current lot and the next upcoming lot in a Live Auction.
Note: The extra increment won't be placed until the item is up for live bidding, so it is possible that you could be outbid by a bid placed prior to live bidding, such as another proxy bid, live proxy bid, mail bid, etc., which could result in your losing the lot by that one increment. For the same reason, it is also possible that a currently losing bid with bid protection placed could potentially win the lot once the lot is subject to live bidding and the Bid Protection increment(s) is placed.

Bibliophiles aspiring to create or add to their own personal libraries have one last opportunity to bid on hundreds of rare items from a legendary collection at the Sept. 10-11 Important English and American Literature: The William A. Strutz Library, Part III, Rare Books Signature®
Auction.
This third and final sale comprises a wider and deeper selection from the celebrated library formed over 60 years by attorney and avid reader William A. Strutz of Bismarck, North Dakota. Heritage Auctions established numerous record prices in its $5.6 million sale of the first part of the Strutz library on June 27, 2024, and realized more than $1.2 million with the second auction in December 2024.

"This final portion of the sale of the Strutz Library is the largest in volume and range of material and further represents the depth of Mr. Strutz' collecting taste, with a focus on books of literary significance, in superb original condition and with important provenance. Presentation and association copies abound throughout these nearly 400 lots," says Francis Wahlgren, Heritage Auctions' International Director of Rare Books & Manuscripts. "This sale includes his favorite genres and authors, with strong emphasis on English and American poetry."

Headlining the library's concluding auction, the 266-volume complete Modern Library assemblage is rare enough in its scope and rarer still to remain in such fine condition, with all but four of the works still retaining their original dust jackets. Such an expansive lot would make for an impressive collection on its own or comprise an impressive foundation of any personal or institutional library.
