Since she broke into public consciousness, Vivian Maier's mythos has threatened to overshadow the immediate power of her work. But her eye stands, even outside of her story.
The use of mirrors in her self-portraits is one of Vivian Maier's signatures, and is put to particularly strong work here, where the infinitely repeating image of her echoes the motif of the wallpaper, and the side mirror captures yet another side of the photographer. It's one of my favorites in the sale.

The two hands which frame this powerful street scene by Vivian Maier are my favorite element, giving it an incredible sense of motion, even as the figures in the background seem frozen. I want to know more, and I want to write my own story, which is how I love to feel while looking at a photo.

One of the most unexpected surprises of working on this sale is getting a sense of Vivian Maier's personal style. Though often imagined as somewhat drab and severe, she had a great eye for jewelry, and loved a pattern, as seen in the fabric she chose for the dresses in this lot, which she made herself.
