Federico Zandomeneghi was born into a family of sculptors in Venice but preferred to paint. Having moved to Paris in 1874, he was soon exhibiting his canvases with the Impressionists. La Modiste, dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, is typical of his work in that it focuses on a female subject in a quiet moment, with rich, swirling colours offering a counterpoint to the air of stillness

Made more than 2,700 years ago, this bronze figure of an archer is kitted out with a horned helmet, double tunic and shin-protecting greaves. It comes from the prehistoric civilisation that thrived on the Mediterranean island of Sardinia during the Nuragic period, which produced works ranging from monumental stone towers to finely crafted bronzes depicting animals, boats and warriors

The title of this 1842 French publication translates as Scenes from the Private and Public Lives of Animals. It is full of satirical images by the illustrator J.J. Grandville (pseudonym of Jean Ignace Isidore Gérard) reflecting human society in animal form, with landlords as vultures and politicians as hippos. George Sand and Honoré de Balzac are among the contributing writers

The British artist Matthew Lindop finds inspiration in the urban environment, with many of his paintings depicting London’s architectural landmarks. In Chrysler Building, from 2023, he turns his attention to New York. The radiant Art Deco skyscraper stands out against the blue sky in a dramatic image intensified by Lindop’s signature use of flat colour, hard edges and gloss paint
