With the second quarter of 2026 behind us, we can now look back at the most expensive books sold during this time. Several remarkable books and manuscripts have joined the collections of people and institutions who appreciate the importance of preserving rare historical items. These include medieval manuscripts, an early edition of Sylvia Plath's The Bell Jar, and a first edition of Dalton Trumbo's antiwar novel Johnny Got His Gun. The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath (Victoria Lucas) - $5,800
|
First edition copy of Sylvia Plath's best-known work, and one of the most iconic female coming-of-age stories. Because of the autobiographical content of the novel, The Bell Jar's first and second editions were published under the pseudonym of Victoria Lucas. The pseudonym was later changed to Sylvia Plath’s name in later editions. The Bell Jar tells the story of Esther Greenwood, a talented and ambitious young woman who struggles with mental illness and societal pressures in the 1950s. |

Johnny Got His Gun by Dalton Trumbo - $4,000 |
|
|
Johnny Got His Gun is an anti-war novel written in 1938 (published 1939) by the renowned American novelist and screenwriter Dalton Trumbo. This book became Trumbo’s most successful novel, winning the American Booksellers Award in 1940. In 1971, Trumbo wrote the screenplay and directed the film based on the book, which won the Cannes Prix Spécial du Jury and many other awards. |
