From your description, this is a BIOS password. *Someone* had to set it; a BIOS password doesn't magically create itself. If your friend seriously can't remember it, then possibly he can ask whoever *he* got the laptop from. Otherwise contact the laptop mftr. for instructions. You can remove a BIOS-level password yourself - with guidance - on some machines. On others, the machine will need to be sent back to the laptop mftr. So you need to call their tech support and ask.
