Problem with Vista file sharing?   

I'd be grateful if someone could give me some pointers as to what I might be 
doing wrong.  I have a home network with an XP desktop and XP & Vista 
laptops.  I can share files & printers both ways between the desktop and the 
XP laptop, but whilst the Vista laptop can access files/printers on the other 
(XP) machines, it won't allow access to its own files.  I'm about to make a 
big purchasing decision to replace the XP desktop with a Vista desktop, but 
I'm concerned that the laptops might not be able to access its files/printers.

We can't tell you what you have done, right or wrong!

and read the Vista file and Printer Sharing link at MS below as well

Permissions/Share info is there as well.

If using Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro I.S., make sure file and printer 
sharing is enabled in THEIR firewall (or LAN allowed, depending on how their 
Exceptions are worded in their Firewall)

1st thing to do is make sure that the Workgroup Name of ALL the computers is 
the SAME.

In Vista Network and Sharing:

Network Discovery: ON (So it can see the other computers) 

Network set to Private (Public is for hotspots, airports, etc)

File Sharing: ON

Public Folder Sharing: ON (Vista’s Public Folder is the same as XP’s Shared 
Docs)

Password Protected: OFF (unless you want to set up identical usernames and 
passwords (passwords can be different) on ALL computers in your Network) If 
you have it ON, you will be asked for a username and password when you try to 
access a Vista computer from an XP computer, or a Vista computer.

Also, run the XP’s Home or Small Office Network File and Printer Sharing 
Wizard to include Vista in your “New” Network, even if you had an XP Network 
set up prior to adding a Vista computer to it(redoing the Wizard seems to 
work for XP machines!). 

In “My Network Places”: “Set up a Home or Small Office Network”
OR under Accessories > Communications > Network Setup Wizard > Allow File 
and Printer Sharing.

Mick - I've been through the whole sharing scenario and can only get it 
working partially.  I've ensured the workgroup name is the same on both 
machines.  I've disabled firewalls (Windows firewall seems to get in the 
way).  I've established file sharing and set up a share for some folders on 
both machines.  I noticed first that on each machine's "network places", only 
its own machine is listed - so the XP machine can't see the Vista m/c and 
vice versa.   In Windows Explorer on the Vista machine, I can explicitly map 
a n/w drive to a shared folder (or drive) on the XP machine, but cannot do 
vice versa.  The Vista machine also accesses a shared printer which is 
connected to the XP machine.   So the partial networking I can accomplish is 
one-way, i.e. accessing XP folders/printers from Vista, but not the other way 
round.
