Not as far as I can see; from what you've said it relates to Vista SP1 ... this
is a windows update but it is not Windows Update, if you follow the distinction.
It presumably wouldn't matter whether you'd installed SP1 via Windows Update,
manually, or whether it came preinstalled on your PC. Not that it matters, of
course; I'm just being pedantic at this point. :-)

I can't argue with this convincingly, because we're still an XP shop, but I find
it hard to believe that this is a universal condition. Certainly it's a problem
which should be reported; I appreciate you've probably spent more time on this
already than you want to, and have the problem fixed, but if anyone else is
having the same issue I'd suggest trying the free SP1 support (available until
March 18, 2009):

Or you could ask for support from the hardware manufacturer and/or retailer,
particularly if it is a new device.

The hotfix in question fixes a specific bug in the initial release of Windows
Vista, a bug which isn't present in service pack 1. The symptoms may be the
same or similar, but it isn't the same bug.

Thanks for providing this suggestion, although there should be a better
solution. (In particular, this won't help those with new computers as SP1 will
have been preinstalled with the OS and so won't be removable.)

I think if it was happening to everyone it would have been! It may be an issue
with specific USB devices, or more likely with specific USB controllers,
motherboard designs, or whatever. (It might also relate to third-party
software, but in this context that seems less likely.)

   Harry.

Re: Same problem with KB940199
Well, I'll jump into the middle of this just to say that SP1 screwed up my
USB devices as well. I tried all the workarounds and nothing worked until I
uninstalled SP1 (that's all - no other hot fixes) and my USB devices started
working perfectly again. By "USB devices" I mean such "non-standard" devices
as a Creative Zen Vision M (natively supported by Vista so there are no
drivers as such) and an Epson multifunction printer. Yes, I'm being
sarcastic. SP1 is a steaming turd and should be fixed, or at least the
problem should be openly acknowledged by Microsoft. Once people know that
the "patch" is the problem, you'll see that many people have this problem.
There are lots of people like my friend that think its just normal for them
to have to reinstall USB devices everytime they reboot. They have the bug
and think it's normal. What does that say about Windows in general?

Re: Same problem with KB940199
Harry,

Thanks for your time again to answer me and also to do a copy&paste of my
findings/problems to the Vista area.

As I've said earlier, all the problems with USB could not be solved from the
manufacture as they had no drivers or work arounds.

At least, I was able to find a solution and I agree with you that its not
the best solution, to uninstall an entire servicepack only to reinstall it.
Perhaps in the future, this issue will be addresed, as I'm sure more people
will have this problem in the future.

As you say too, perhaps other people would have bought machines with SP1
pre-installed and so harder for them to see the problem immediately.

Thanks again for your response, keep up the good work, although you didn't
solve my problem, you still provided insight and were curious enough to have
a genuine interest in the problem.
Have a good weekend.
