Using Search in Explorer with Vista
Hey All,

Can someone tell me how I can recursively search folders in Windows Vista
using Explorer? Currently, it only seems to search the currently selected
folder.

In that same vein, is there a way or has anyone found any third party tools
which mimic the classic Explorer interface?

Thanks,

TC

Copernic Destop Search is fast and searches files even by text content.

Everything 1.1.4.301 is very light, gives instant results, and it works like
'autocomplete' does.

I use and love the free AgentRansack. It's fast, easy to use and intuitive.
If it's on your PC, AgentRansack will find it. I find the search feature on
Vista useless. AR works on both Vista and XP.

The Vista Search is very powerful and will find anything by file or contents
in a file, if one knows how to use it, which is pretty easy.

Re: Using Search in Explorer with Vista
OK.

So, how does one use it?

It wasn't very intuitive for me and I don't have a lot of time.

Do you have any links regarding tutorials or documentation?

I was not able to quickly find functionality that previously existed.

Vista search automatically searches in all folders in the indexed

NOT!

After two hours of trying to locate a file in Vista, I mounted the drive
from a remote XP machine and searched across the network. Found the file in
less than three minutes.

And was the file in an INDEXED location?

You can use Windows-key and F-Key combination to get to Advanced Search. You
can use the ALT-key to shows the Tool/Folder Options.

You can go to Folder Options/View and enable Always Show Menu, which will
show the menu with Tools on the Adv Search and Explore at all times

You know I should start charging you some kind of fee.

Can I help it if you couldn't figure things out, and you don't know how to
look things up?

Shall I hold your hand like I am holding this other person's hand or are you

Simply go to start and use the Search functionality there. Enter the
name of what you want to search and once it starts searching select
Search Everywhere.

hands. Kinda sweet :-)

More seriously, I'm not sure what spurred this type of response you
provided. I requested some help which, according to you, should be easy
help to provide. Please feel free to offer something of value. I'll leave
the "holding hands" stuff to other forums and websites better suited for
such things.

Why are you selecting a folder? Just do Start and type in the Search

I was selecting a folder because I'm used to the context menu that shows up
when you right click a folder in previous versions of Windows where a
'Search' option is offered.

Both of you need to stop, because neither one of you know what you're
talking about. The search is only going to look in indexed locations, which
there are only three default locations out of the box. The entire HD is not
indexed like it is on XP, but it can be customized on Vista.

If you don't get the hit that you're looking for, then in the ADV search
move the Location off of Indexed locations only and select <C> or something
and also enable "Include non indexed hidden and system files". You can point
to a folder too with the settings.

Re: Using Search in Explorer with Vista
Guys Guys Guys... please

First, thanks for the help. The info on the Advanced Search menu and the
new settings in the Folder Options was exactly what I needed. The Folder
Options, I must admit, I whiffed on because I was in there but didn't catch
it as I was looking for other things.

In any event, the reason I posted to begin with was because I was looking
for someone that had already been through vs. trying to reinvent the wheel.

Mr. Arnold:

Vista search simply does not work on some machines like mine. I have seen
Vista search work, but as an early one to adopt Vista I have never seen
search work correctly on my machine, after re-indexing countless times and
after changing parameters to index contents of specified files.

I have an example that I shared with Microsoft of searching six identical
files. Vista's search can find only three of them. Microsoft made search
fast, but it doesn't always work and cannot be trusted. So what good is
that?

Microsoft now blocks my E-mail requests to trouble-shoot this search
problem. They do not care that Vista search does not work, and have no
diagnostic tools or suggestions to explore the failure on my machine.

I want to go back to XP because of the flawed Vista search but I refuse to
pay more money because of a defective Vista search.

I have wasted countless hours trying to get Vista seach to work, and it's
time to move on. I definitely will take a look at Apple or Linux for any
future machines since Microsoft offers no support even to those that are
early adopters of its products.

Why is it too much to ask for a search that ALWAYS works? The search
provided by Agent Ransack is the only reason I have not abandoned Vista.

Well, you have to make the Advanced Search "Include non indexed, hidden
and system files", and point to a drive letter or folder using the
Advanced search. The files you were searching for may not have even been
indexed.

See the above. And then if you do the above, then Adv Search is seaching
in all files and folders if you happen to be pointing to a drive letter
like <C>.

What can I say?

To be honest, I think it's you that doesn't understand how to use the
search.

Are you sure you knew what you were doing with the search?

It's always worked for me. And I am going to flat-out say it. I don't
think you knew what you were fully doing with the search and how to use
it. But that's just my opinion.
