Need some help
Hey Folks

I just built my first computer, I am a relative noob to all of this. I
am having some issues that I am not even sure if is caused by Vista or
not.
I am crashing out of a couple of programs and I am crashing out of
windows- as in the system goes to the blue screen and restarts.

What info do I need to tell you in order to have you help me figure
this out?

Nothing is oced.
System is all brand new:
Vista 64 bit
MB GIGABYTE GA-X48T-DQ6 775 X48 RT
Cpu - Q6600
MEM 2Gx2 MUSHKIN 996629 DDR3
HD Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb
GPU SAPPHIRE 4870X2
PSU is 1000w PC Power and Cooling
CPU temp is 35c to 45c ish
I'm not even sure how to start diagnosing the problem. I updated the
bios, successfully according to the @bios application. I have updated
the drivers on everything I can think off. Vista is updated.

Thanks!

RE: Need some help
Have a look in Device Manger to make sure your Drivers are up to date for
your Hardware.
Start>Right-click Computer>Properties> Device Manager.

Also, with the problem Programs, check with their Maunfacturers to see if
they are Vista compatibile and/or if there are any updates for them.

Re: Need some help
hey there

I checked all the devices for updated drivers, all seem to be correct.
Of the two programs that keep dumping me into the BSOD, one is Word
2007, which I assume is Vista 64 compatable. The other is not but
others I know are playing it on Vista 64 with no problem.

Thanks

Check your event view for problems right before the crash.
Try reinstalling the crashing software, including Vista.
BSOD are almost always hardware related. Run a scan on your disk.

Re: Need some help
Hey Taylor

My event view has no entries for hardware, could it still be a hardware
issue?

When you say to run a scan on my disc, how do I go about that?

Thanks!

Look for events that are hardware related, ie a driver stopped working or
something. It may not be hardware, and the event viewer can give you clues
to any errors that occurred right before the crash.

In Windows Explorer, right click on the drive Properties, select the tools
tab, and click on the Click Now button in the Error-checking frame.

Re: Need some help
If nothing else works run a memory test. Fast machines do not like mixed
memory and even if you got the memory from the same store on the same
day it may have come from two different batches, and that can be enough
to cause trouble.

You will need to let a test run for a few hours to make sure.

Another option is to remove one memory stick and try just 2GB. If the
problem goes away then try the same but with the other stick. If still
no problem then maybe they are not quite compatible when used together.

Sometimes the latest BIOS is not the best, did this happen before the
update or don't you know? I'm really tempted to say that testing with
2GB only could be a clue to BIOS problems too.

And if you are new to this kind of thing then congratulations on writing
a really useful and concise post. There is now a lot of deceptive
software (Claims to be antivirus but is itself actually spyware and so
on) so feel free to ask for opinions in an appropriately titled post.

Re: Need some help
Thanks Charlie, the next thing I will try will be the memory test with
one unit in. They were a pre packaged Mushkin item from Newegg. I
don't know if they test before hand or not.

I updated the bios after the problem surfaced, thinking maybe it was
the problem.

And yes, this is truly my first ground up computer build. I had added
memory and GPUs before but never the whole deal. Lol, its been a bit
frustrating but I am riding the learning curve.

Re: Need some help
Good for you. Of course the replies you get here will have emphasis in
each user's personal experience, and one of my suppliers had been sent a
bad batch of memory - so that caused me some aggravation. It can show up
as any number of different things so any error messages are
misleading. Let people here know how you get on, it helps others.

Good luck
