NWN (1) on Vista
Im new to Vista, and one of the games I play most frequently is
Neverwinter Nights. I tried to install the NWN Diamond edition on my
system, and it seemed to install correctly. I was able to configure,
and to update, but I was not able to actually run the program. I
havent yet checked to see if it will let me run the toolset.
I feel like an idiot posting this here without more accurate
information, however Im at work, and I dont have the specs for the
laptop or the precise error messages NWN was giving me in front of me,
so Ill have to update with that a little later. For now, Im hoping
someone has a clever idea I can try.
Failing which, Im presently tempted to turn my system into a
dual-boot so I can run XP on it. At least that way Id still be able
to support the rest of my hardware as well.

Download dxwebsetup.exe from Microsoft and run that. It will install DX9
files the game may need to run. Did you install to deafault location of
program files (x86)? If you did you should uninstall it and install to
another folder like just C:\NWN because the program files (x860 is a
protected folder. Game may need admin rights so you need to right click
the shortcut5 file and select run as admin. Right click game shortcut or
its ecxe file and select compatibility tab, select XP mode and click ok.
These are all things to try when running a game on Vista. If none of them
work then you may indeed have to dual boot to XP to run it.

Re: NWN (1) on Vista
Try to move Neverwinter Nights folder out of Program Files. Stupid game lock-open dialog.tlk, chitin.key, other files, and, moreover, creates stuff in subfolders like localvault, servervault, dmvault, tempclient, saves etc. Be sure to setup read/write access to whole game folder.
