Restoring e-mail from Vista backup
Last Fall, I made a backup of all my data and e-mail files using the Vista
Backup & Restore Center. I backed this up on an external hard drive.

Subsequently, I deleted all of that "old" e-mail from my active hard drive.

I now want to be able to find an old e-mail that was on that backup. I have
reconnected my external drive. I find the backup files there - but how do I
just get to the e-mail files so that I can view them - and find the e-mail I
want to retrieve?

Re: Restoring e-mail from Vista backup
Hello Gary,

You cannot restore just one file from that file type, instead you will
need to restore all of the email backup file type and just delete the
ones you do not want afterwards.

http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/100253-restore-backup-files.html

This tutorial will show you another email message backup and restore
option you might consider. It will give you a lot more flexibility on
what you want restored.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Re: Restoring e-mail from Vista backup
Brink,

Thanks for the reply. I have reviewed the restore-backup tutorials link you
provided. I'm still a bit confused. I don't want to lose all of my current
files by restoring the old backup totally.

Do I have to restore the entire backup - perhaps to a new location on my
hard disc (if it is big enough). Can I somehow just restore the backup
emails? How do I locate where in the backup files the e-mail files are
located?

Or, do I just create a new backup of my current configuration - restore
everything to go back to the old files - and then when I am done - restore
again from my just made backup?

Obviously, I am still confused -- and I don't want to just start trying
things for fear I will overwrite my current files and lose them.

Thanks.

Re: Restoring e-mail from Vista backup
Hi Gary,

You should not lose any of your current messages while restoring only
the "Backup Files" email file types. As a safety precaution, you should
backup your current messages using the export method in the tutorial
just in case something goes wrong.

Hope this helps,
Shawn
