Visual Studio 2005 <---> IIS 7.0+WebDAV For Visual SourceSafe Access
Hi All,
I had a kludge where Visual Studio 2005 running on a client computer
could access a Visual Source Safe 2005 running on Windows Server 2003
running inside a VM on a server computer. It worked for months until
the hard disk on my server crashed.
The reason I had the kludge in the first place (apart from the fact
that Microsoft engineers are horribly inept at engineering distributed-
anything), was that I had read somewhere that Source-Safe-Over-
Internet required IIS on the server side to support WebDAV, and IIS
7.0 did not support WebDAV until very recently, February of 2008.
So now I have IIS 7.0, and WebDAV, and though I do reseach in security
models, distribtued communications, etc...I have been looking through
the IIS, Windows, VS2005, and VSS mess for hours now, tryign to make
sense of it. It took me nearly a week to get the first kludge working
before, and strangely I miss it. I guess I knew all along that it it
broke, I would never be able to fix it.
Now I want a new kludge. :)
If anyone knows how to set this up, I would appreciate it. Right now
the error message is:
"The specified share path cannot be accessed by the SourceSafe Web
Service."
This message is generated inside a VS2005 dialog box while trying to
open an existing Source Safe database via a URL + UNC path
combination:
www.foo.com
\\FooServer\FooShare
