This used to work (loading asp.dll filter), but stopped working 2+
months ago, so I can't remember exactly what I was doing that
caused this to stop working, but
I think I was installing sql svr 2005 at the time.
I reregistered asp.dll and the registration succeeded, but these
errors continue.
IIS is able to serve other file types, but I got the dreaded down red
arrow on the ISAPI Filters tab of my web site properties for this asp
filter.
DEPENDS.EXE doesn't seem to indicate any missing dependent DLLs for
asp.dll, but I'm not exactly sure what that would look like anyway if
there were a problem.
Can't find any errors about unable to logon any users in the events
viewer.
I reinstalled DTS package but that didn't help.
I reinstalled the COM components IIS In-Process Applications, IIS Out-
of-Process Pooled Applications, and IIS Utilities, but that didn't
help.
Anybody have any other ideas?

Thanks, I did what you suggested, rebooted, and the asp.dll load
errors went away, so that solved that immediate problem.
Now when I try to load any asp page I get:
Server Error in '/' Application.

and my IIS log file says it is a 403 error status.
No errors in any of the event viewers.
I don't recall expressly forbidding asp pages to run. My website
configuration looks OK for asp extensions ( for GET, HEAD, POST,
TRACE ), and scripts are allowed to run on the site.
Security is set to LOW for the site, so that shouldn't be a problem.

Maybe it's not possible for VS2003, VS2005, Orcas Beta 2, and asp to
all be served by IIS. I don't know.

To make your head hurt even more -- if you did the same configuration
of ASP.Net 2.0 on IIS6 and added a <httpHandler> for .asp to a
DefaultHttpHandler derived class which passes the URL along -- what
you configured would work. There is special magic between ASP.Net 2.0
and IIS6 to make it work. It won't work on IIS5.1, and it won't work
with ASP.Net 1.1.
Yes, the exact same configuration that fails on IIS5.1 will work on
IIS6... and then promptly not work on IIS7 because it has a better
mechanism to achieve all of it.
When you play around with reconfiguring the IIS request pipeline
(that's what you are doing, when you want to "route things through
module X", things like this will happen. You just have to know the IIS
request pipeline or else it'd never make sense.
Especially when the IIS request pipeline changed a whole lot between
IIS5, IIS6, and IIS7 to the point that configuration-level
compatibility may not exist, but functionality keeps getting better.
The pipeline changed to better accommodate the features that you want,
but it meant breaking the existing configuration hacks.
