DsReplicaAdd failed with status 1396 (0x574)   

Greetings,

I need to add this domain controller which was promoted to replace a broken 
controller, as replicating to our root DC.  Unfortunately the original 
domain controller died before it completed a replication to the root to let 
it know that this new DC had been created.  I followed the instructions for 
the 1411 error on a previous occasion and it worked, but on this one, it 
keeps saying "the target account name is incorrect"  Any thoughts 
appreciated.

Hello -,

Please describe more detailed what happens and how many dc's you have now 
up and running. If i understand you correct, the DC which  with the new installed 
was replicating is died during the replication process.

If you have one or more DC's running, make sure with dcdiag, netdiag and 
repadmin /showreps, that between them all is fine.

Then disconnect the new built one from the domain and try to demote it, if 
it does not work reinstall it and promote it again. Before check on all other 
DC's that no entries exist from the new one.

if:
* you were promoting a DC and it died before you finished
AND
* you want to promote a new DC using the same name
THEN

first cleanup the AD metadata of the DC that died as first, let that 
replicate and after that promote a new DC using the old name

this should work for assuming the scenarion I described above
