Help regarding the new exam 70-301
I'm writing this email, as I don't have any new directions with the
new (and very elusive) MSF exam 70-301. I'm hoping that maybe someone
will lead the way, as I don't think that I'm the only one with this
problem.
Before I'm starting, let me explain that I'm PMP and IT Project+
certified, with more than 10 years experience with PM in the IT world,
and especially in Microsoft technologies. So for me to pursuit the MSF
was the right thing to do but I'm starting to regret dearly about
this step.
I read the entire MSF white papers + the MSF course 1846A, but now
after the second time that I'm failing the exam, I don't have any
ideas what to do next!
I have a long history of studying and passing exams (university and IT
certification), but I never saw exam like this! The reading materials
are not even connected to the questions in the exam with its very
tricky, elusive and unexplained questions!
In the last two time, my score didn't get above 500 (passing score is
700), and I don't know even which questions / directions to ask myself
for maybe attacking once again this elusive exam! It's not that I need
to have 5 more points to pass it. I don't have any direction and it's
very hard to find anything on the net about this exam.
Can someone help and lead some future directions / discussion
regarding this new exam. This will be much appreciated, and not just
for me!!!
Is anyone already pasted this exam?

Re: Help regarding the new exam 70-301
Hi Guy,
I will recommend you to read this page first "Preparation Guide for Exam
70-301" http://www.microsoft.com/learning/exams/70-301.asp. Then review your
knowledge using "Skills Being Measured" matrix from the same page. Another
good resource for this exam is MOC 2710.
If you failed recently maybe you can benefit from this offer "Second Shot
Offer : February 28-May 31, 2005"
http://www.microsoft.com/learning/mcp/offers/2ndshot/details.asp.
Good luck,

Re: Help regarding the new exam 70-301
Hi Cristian,
Thanks for your remarks but
1. I already walkthrough also in the 2710A course that covers the MS
exam 70-300, and also before going to any exam, I'm reading very
carefully the Microsoft preparation guide.
2. I'm using already the coupon of the second shot provided by
Microsoft, so the next round for me will be free. But I'll not go
before understanding what is happening with me in this exam.
The issue here is that I'm trying to speak with a person that actually
did the exam and passed it, just to try to understand the Microsoft
way of thinking in this exam. After studying and taking the exam two
times (never happened in my life), I'm still going back to square one,
as I don't know which questions to ask, for getting the right answers
bottom-line: I don't know what to do for third preparation for this
elusive exam
Help is very appreciated! Did you passed this exam?

Re: Help regarding the new exam 70-301
Hi Guy
I sat this exam last week and passed easily. In my opinion, close study of
Course 1846 coupled with a thorough reading of the MSF 3.0 whitepapers gives
you all the information you need to pass this exam.
The questions require careful reading, and in some ways they could be seen
as reading comprehension tests; those for whom English is a second language
may find some difficulties.
Clear thinking, and a good understanding of the above two resources, are
enough to pass this exam.
Hope this helps

Re: Help regarding the new exam 70-301
You need to bear in mind that the exam is designed to test
understanding and application of MSF, not just
memorisation of what's in the courseware and white
papers.
The best preparation for this is to apply MSF on real
projects and use the techniques described in the
framework. A second-best is to attend the 1846 class and
(hopefully) participate in discussions with other people
who have applied these and similar approaches.
All of the questions do relate to the use of MSF
techniques and a practitioner with moderate experience
should be able to distinguish the correct answers from the
incorrect ones. The questions are not deliberately tricky
or elusive, but, just as in real project situations, you
need to marshall all the information given to find the
correct answers.
Hope this helps.

Re: Help regarding the new exam 70-301
Agreed, though finding a team and an organisation that is willing to embrace
MSF can be a challenge. IMHO working in a non-MSF team, and experiencing
first-hand the problems that MSF addresses can open your eyes to how badly
things have been handled and how much better they could be handled under
MSF.
Just my 2 cents.

Re: Help regarding the new exam 70-301
Exactly the same situation. I successfully passed MCAD & 70-300 exams
without any troubles.
There wasn't possibility to take the 1846 course, but I've read it inside
and out, MSF whitepapers too...
Have got a lot of PM practice...
I've scored 680 on exam - average weight of one question is 28, so one
question was crucial :)
Developing, Stabilizing, Deployment - 100%, Planning, Team Building - Good
and
Facilitating Risks is below the average...
I realized during comment phase that I missed "budget was accepted" in
description while I'm calculating
the Exposure and my choice for the highest priority risk was wrong. It was
already avoided risk :( Stupid mistake...
So, there were some other risk-related questions about legacy application
and old programmers, upgrade printers and
not completed teams and answers were very debatable, IMHO... I marked and
remembered them, but I wasn't confident.
Could anybody helps to choose between questionable choices?

Re: Help regarding the new exam 70-301
Hello Sergey,
It would be impossible to discuss questions at this level of detail without
breaking the NDA.
In general, I found very few ambiguous questions. Most of those that I marked
turned out to need more careful reading to understand the question.
There were a couple of questions that I still found ambiguous, so I marked
and commented on those and moved on.
