XP / BIOS Reboot Problem
Hi,

i've got trouble with rebooting my system. Every time i try to restart
Windows, the BIOS hangs in POST before HD-autodetect. If i just shutdown
the computer and turn it back on later the symptoms are the same. The
system is _not_ completely disconnected from power (-> the power module is
still on, the plug in the socket) whe i switch it off.
After a cold-boot (pushing the reset-button) everything is running normal.

Now, usually i'd say that this a hardware-related problem. Some trouble with
the harddisks maybe, or some compatibility trouble with the mainboard. But,
and this is a big but, i've got a parallel install of Linux and there
aren't any problems. I can reboot without any hangs. So, it definitely
isn't bad hardware.

Any ideas what went wrong ?

System:
Abit AN8 SLI Fatality
AMD 3200+ Venice
2GB RAM
2* NVidia XFX 6600GT
550W power module
Windows XP with SP2 and all patches
fw enabled, viriiscanner F-Prot
MRT & Windows Defender installed & running

RE: XP / BIOS Reboot Problem
Could it be CMOS Battery is going bad replace it with a new one. Another, try
to BOOT without any hardware attached to your Computer (Etra Hardware) and
see what will produce the problem.
Hope this helps

Re: XP / BIOS Reboot Problem
If it hangs during post at the hd detection then it is nothing to do with
Windows. It has to be hardware, bios (check for update) or motherboard or
hard drive. Can you try a known good drive?

Please repost if you find the fault

CMOS bat is okay, just 1/2 a year old and full voltage, battery contacts are
o.k. too.
First thing i did was pulling off all external hardware, no difference
there.

Thanx!

Nope, hangs _before_ hd detect, not while. Hd's are okay. Anyways, the
problem doesn't happen if i reboot from linux, so if it was a hardware
problem (like a dying hd, faulty ram (*) or a low cmos bat) it would be the
same there.
Does anybody know if there have been acpi/ apm fixes (...) coming with one
of the more recent updates? I haven't had this problem all the time, it
began about ~2-3 weeks ago.
Could it be an issue of the Starforce driver? I've got me one of those and
de-installed it from device manager (show non-pnp drivers/ remove).
Unfortunately i can't tell anymore if the problem did start right after
this, but i think it didn't, at last not immediately.

(*) checked memory with memtest86, made about a dozen complete test cycles,
no errors found. Of course no 100% reliable test, but the more obvious
errors should havbe been reported.

Thanx
Carsten
