Need to install new HDD, but XP is scattered across both drives
The C: drive is failing in one of our machines that has two hard drives in
it. The other drive is partitioned into X: and Z:.

I have used a backup program to copy C:, X: and Z: into a network drive on
another computer.

Now the problem comes that I have no direction of what to do now. I have a
new HDD to put into the computer and no directions of how to deal with this.
All the directions I have found thus far require me being able to start up XP
after installing the new HDD, yet that is impossible as the C: drive is
sporadic and the XP program files appear to be located on both the C: and
X:... I found this out through trial and error of removing first one and then
the other drives from the system with the new HDD and the system will not
start.

I am open to the possibility of pulling the C:, reformatting the X:/Z: to
become the new C: and installing the new HDD as slave... the sad fact is that
I do not know what I need to do to accomplish it.

Your grace and patience are supremely appreciated!

Rev the new HD should have a CD, or floppy, to provide means of copying C
drive to new HD

Not always.

And with different physical geometric characteristics between an "old"
drive and a "new" drive, there's not a sure-fire, flawless way to move
it, and also free.

Symantec/Norton ghost seems the best, but you gotta pay a license for
each physical drive.. so you'd be at 3 licenses right there.

MS Windows (NT flavors) are good at maintaining the ability to boot and
work, but eventually, it's just a good idea to clear and start over. I
do, at least once a year. sometimes once every 6 months.
