Sound like the video card is shot. Turn the computer off and either replace
the graphics card or dispose of the computer in an environmentally safe way.
If you haven't used it for a year, chances are you really don't need it.

Re: old gateway computer windows 98
Do you have a 98 startup disk? Does the computer read the floppy? I have an old
Gateway that has a battery, does yours?

Re: old gateway computer windows 98
FWIW, my computer is also a Gateway that I bought when I worked there. I got
it in April or May of 2000. I've added a secondary hard drive, maxed out my
RAM, and I am now running Win XP. I still only have the original graphics
card but that's because I'm okay with what I have. I was just given a DVD
burner and want to install it tomorrow night.

Depending on your situation, popping a new graphics card into your computer
isn't a huge venture, financial or otherwise. But since you said it's been a
year, maybe it is time to have a bit of fun and take a sledge hammer to it.
We've all wanted to do that from time to time. ;-)

Charge 50 a slam and invite all of your friends. And if you happen to be in
my neck of the woods, I'll bring a $5 bill! ;-)
