PROBLEM WITH AUTO UPDATES
I'm having a major problem with automatic updates on XP service pack 3. A
dialog box appears in the system tray telling me that my computer is at risk
because automatic updates are not turned on. It further says that I need to
go to the Security Center and turn on Automatic Updates. When I attempt to
do this, another dialog box appears saying that Automatic Updates can not be
started from the Security Center and I should go to the Control Panel, click
Systems / Automatic Updates and turn on the Automatic Updates from there.
When I do this, the Automatic Updates are shown to be on and that does not
work.

When I go to the Windows Update page, it says that the site cannot continue
because Automatic Updates is not enabled. It also says that two other items
need to be enabled for the Automatic Update website to function. It gives me
a list of things to do to be sure that these services are enabled properly.

For Automatic Updates, it says to go to start / run and type in
"services.msc" then to click on Automatic Updates in the list of services.
Then it says to change the "service type" to "automatic" then press the
"start" button to enable the service. When I do this a dialog box appears
saying the following: "Could not start the automatic update service on local
computer.Error 1058 The service cannot be started because it is disabled
or because it has no enabled devices associated with it."

I've been trying to fix this for several days now and I'm getting nowhere.
Can someone please help me with this?

Thanks,
larry
