Microsoft Word 2003 opening documents EXTEREMLY slow...
I am at my wits end with this.
I just purchased a brand new Dell computer (Windows XP), and Word opens fine
if it's a blank document or just starting Word itself. If I try to open a
document, it takes 5-10 minutes to open it, if at all.

I HAVE ALREADY TRIED THE FOLLOWING:

1.) Go to Control Panel, Folder Options, File Types, scroll down to and
select (DOC for Word files) or XLS (for Excel files), click Advanced,
select Open entry, click the edit Button.
Now uncheck "Use DDE" and then put your cursor in the Application box,
arrow all the way to the right and put in "%1" (include the quote
marks), IF there is /dde remove it. Then OK your way out. Things should
work quickly again.
2.) Un-installing/re-installing Microsoft Office 2003
3.) Deleting Normal.dot

NONE OF THESE WORKED!!!

Please help, I am greatly distressed by this because I do a lot of work in
Word 2003 and am quite angry by this problem.

Thank you!!

Re: Microsoft Word 2003 opening documents EXTEREMLY slow...
I have the same problem with all Office 2007 products and have also tried all
the "standard" actions as MoMo has. I have no network drives to disconnect.
My PC is becomimg almost unusable.
From searches I find that this problem is very common but the standard
response is to disable DDE or unmap network drives. Any other suggestions?

RE: Microsoft Word 2003 opening documents EXTEREMLY slow...
I have tried all trick as well but none worked. However I worked out that the
reason that Word files and excel do not load fast enough is a memory
allocation problem:

So here is what you can do:

go to

>control panel
>performance and maitenance
>system
>advanced
>performance
>settings
>advanced
then click "change" at the VIRTUAL MEMORY

click custom size and say put 50 in the initial size and 4000 in the maximum.

No you can click back all the way to your desktop. (you might need to
restart but it seems to be working very well even without restart)

This i basically overiding the automatic system memory allocation which it
seems it is not very clever.

Let me know your results.

Stop your computer automatically managing its virtual memory see my reply
