Error when TechNet loads
I'm testing Vista for the company and I'm having a problem with Office, so I
installed TechNet. There were no errors on the install. When I run the
TechNet application I get the error: "DTE.olb could not be loaded. Please
re-run setup and repair your installation." The repair did not help. I
removed TechNet, checked that there were no obvious leftovers in the
registry, and re-installed it. Again it installed without error, but when I
run TechNet it gets the same error. Any suggestions out there?

Re: Error when TechNet loads
By "TechNet application" are you referring to the "Technical Information
Library"?

Re: Error when TechNet loads
No, I mean Microsoft TechNet.When I try to run TechNet on the Vista
workstation, it gets the error with DTE.olb. I use TechNet all the time so
this is bad.

Re: Error when TechNet loads
Bettie - Your post "...When I run the TechNet application...." is confusing
(at least to me) - there is no "Microsoft TechNet Application" as such -
TechNet is a Microsoft site which provides support and information for IT
personnel and related functions.

Various applications/software is available via the TechNet site - free and
through subscription.

What is the "Microsoft TechNet Application" to which you are refer?.

Re: Error when TechNet loads
My company subscribes to the TechNet service. They send one or more DVD's
every month. To access the KB information you load an application which is on
the TechNet DVD. I only access TechNet on the Internet if I can't find
anything on my local TechNet DVD.

Re: Error when TechNet loads
From my first reply "...By "TechNet application" are you referring to the
"Technical Information Library"?...."

If a TechNet Plus subscriber one of the DVDs your company receives is titled
"Technical Information Library" - The knowledge database (KB) is part of the
library - in additon to information (manuals, resource kits, etc.) regarding
all major Microsoft software The "Library" is to be installed on your
computer.

Re: Error when TechNet loads
I was researching the dte.olb problem and found and article that says this is
sometimes a problem on Vista and that I need to register dte.olb. I tried
that and got an error that basically means that I don't have sufficient
rights. UAC is turned off and I am an administrtor and I run by default in
administrator mode. I found a KB article that says there is a hot fix for
this. Now to be fair the KB also stated that it was was for UAC on and being
at a user level, but this is test machine so if I have to rebuild it , no big
deal. I'll let you know if the fix solves the problem.

Re: Error when TechNet loads
Sad to say, the hotfix did not cure the problem. I brlieve that it is
wnitrely related to rights on the typelib in the registry. I thought that
turning off UAC would allow me as a domain admin to access any part I like.
Wrong. I recently fixed a similar problem with SQL Server 2005 buy taking
ownership on a couple of keys and giving myself rights to them. I tried once
already to do thsi for TechNet unsuccessfully, I'll try again. Any
suggestions for likely places is welcome. IS ther some way to get access to
the whole registry rather than tracking down key after key?

Yes. Use ProcMon (or FileMon; however apparently FileMon doesn't work on Vista).

But before you go that far I would check to see if there aren't any diagnostics from your
install attempt or any additional diagnostics which show up if you try a repair. Etc.

Also it may be significant to know if you have installed the Visual Studio 2005 viewer too
or more specifically which modules your version of dexplore.exe for TechNet is using.

E.g. the current help contains this detail:

<quote>
Note The newest versions of Visual Studio, MSDN and Office 2007 feature an update to the Dexplore
search engine (version 8.0). The TechNet Library uses the 7.0 version of the Dexplore search engine.
As a result, if Visual Studio 2005, Office 2007 or any version of the MSDN Library after January 2006
is installed on the same computer containing the TechNet Library, the default search algorithm will use the
Okapi algorithm, which is what Dexplore version 8.0 has adopted. Subscribers who want to use Boolean
operators in their searches of the TechNet Library will have to explicitly add a Boolean search operator in
capital letters rather than letting them be included implicitly.
</quote>

FWIW I think that that description is misleading. E.g. its not the version of dexplore.exe
that would matter, it's the versions of other modules that aren't mentioned and how they are
hooked into the registry as a result of installing those other products.

You could use Process Explorer to capture such a list of loaded modules with full version details
and then be able to compare it with someone else who wasn't having the same symptom.

Good luck

Re: Error when TechNet loads
That did not help as much as I had hoped. Proc mon found a bunch of
registery folders keys that I do not have. a repair of TechNet did not help.
I tried to register dte.olb again but got the same error that meant access
denied. I do have Office 2007 installed, and under XP I was aware that you
had to change the way you enter Boolean serches. NBD I'm used to it now. I'm
running Vista Enterprise SP1 now so the SP did not help either. TechNet still
refuses to load because of DTE.OLB. Any more ideas? I'm willing to try
antyhing at this point.

Ok. That sounds like a Vista problem then.

However, I just checked the partition I am using TechNet in
and I don't have that module in it. A search of my other partitions
shows that it probably was installed by Visual Studio.
FWIW I have only installed the MSDN Library on this partition.
That's why I have the Okapi issue.

So, perhaps you should elaborate on your symptom?
E.g. is it just annoying or preventing you from doing something?

My biggest beef is how you have to do closures now.
E.g. instead of using the intuitively obvious and simple trailing asterisk syntax
you now have to construct an artificial THRU expression. Ridiculous!

Well, since the module isn't part of TechNet perhaps you should repair
(or uninstall) whatever it is from? ; )

Good luck

Re: Error when TechNet loads
the only symptom is that TechNet will not load at all. DTE.olb is in the
prog files\common\Ms shared\msenv folder. I found KB306905 that said that the
file needed to be registered. since that fails from access is denied, I must
not have write rights to some key somewhere in the registry. The problem is
which one?

So how does that give focus to the module you are trying to register?

Oh. Previously you claimed there was a message.
Where does the message appear?
Perhaps it is logged as well as displayed?
If so, ProcMon could supplment those diagnostics.

> DTE.olb is in the prog files\common\Ms shared\msenv folder.

Hmm... I don't know what went wrong with my previous search.
I do have it there. Also the registry has it here

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\TypeLib\{80CC9F66-E7D8-4DDD-85B6-D9E6CD0E93E2}\7.0\0\win32

FWIW I also have dte80.olb and dte80a.olb in the same directory.
Curiously, neither of those are found referenced in my registry.

> I found KB306905 that said that the

Surely ProcMon will show you that?

Another way to get clues about problems with regsvr32.exe
is to use DependencyWalker to profile the command.
That gives you are trace of all the calls by the dependent modules
including whatever calls the module being registered might make.
You could trace that with ProcMon too. : )

Did you try to find out what app is reponsible for installing that module?
Try repairing or removing *it*?

FWIW here is the shortcut which I use to open TechNet offline.

    "F:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Help\dexplore.exe" /helpcol ms-help://MS.TechNet.2008FEB.1033

ProcMon, tracing the opening of that shortcut, shows an unsuccessful attempt to open

    F:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Help\dte.olb

then the access of the above key and subsequent reading of that module.
That is all until the app is first opened. Help About shows:

    Microsoft Document Explorer 7.0

Re: Error when TechNet loads
Thanks for all your help. This problem was just one of many similar problems
all seemingly related to registry access rights. Since it is a test machine,
I formatted the disk yesterday and re-installed a clean copy of Vista. this
time I am going to do ALL installs with the logon I created during the
install. Maybe this will solve the rights problem. I want to than k you so
much for taking time to help me. It was much appreciated.

Re: Error when TechNet loads
Eureka! After formatting the hard drive on the test machine and re-loading
Vista, I did all the installs under the logon that was added during the
installation. I also ran everything the first time under that logon ID.
Everything works now, even TechNet. All my other problems went away as well.
Thank you for all your help.
