Re: Error when TechNet loads
Sad to say, the hotfix did not cure the problem. I brlieve that it is
wnitrely related to rights on the typelib in the registry. I thought that
turning off UAC would allow me as a domain admin to access any part I like.
Wrong. I recently fixed a similar problem with SQL Server 2005 buy taking
ownership on a couple of keys and giving myself rights to them. I tried once
already to do thsi for TechNet unsuccessfully, I'll try again. Any
suggestions for likely places is welcome. IS ther some way to get access to
the whole registry rather than tracking down key after key?

Yes. Use ProcMon (or FileMon; however apparently FileMon doesn't work on Vista).
But before you go that far I would check to see if there aren't any diagnostics from your
install attempt or any additional diagnostics which show up if you try a repair. Etc.
Also it may be significant to know if you have installed the Visual Studio 2005 viewer too
or more specifically which modules your version of dexplore.exe for TechNet is using.
E.g. the current help contains this detail:
<quote>
Note The newest versions of Visual Studio, MSDN and Office 2007 feature an update to the Dexplore
search engine (version 8.0). The TechNet Library uses the 7.0 version of the Dexplore search engine.
As a result, if Visual Studio 2005, Office 2007 or any version of the MSDN Library after January 2006
is installed on the same computer containing the TechNet Library, the default search algorithm will use the
Okapi algorithm, which is what Dexplore version 8.0 has adopted. Subscribers who want to use Boolean
operators in their searches of the TechNet Library will have to explicitly add a Boolean search operator in
capital letters rather than letting them be included implicitly.
</quote>
FWIW I think that that description is misleading. E.g. its not the version of dexplore.exe
that would matter, it's the versions of other modules that aren't mentioned and how they are
hooked into the registry as a result of installing those other products.
You could use Process Explorer to capture such a list of loaded modules with full version details
and then be able to compare it with someone else who wasn't having the same symptom.
Good luck

Re: Error when TechNet loads
Thanks. I'll try that. I hae installed Office 2007 but TechNet did not work
before that, still ProcMan may provide gfreater knowledge and that never
hurts!!
Thanks

Re: Error when TechNet loads
That did not help as much as I had hoped. Proc mon found a bunch of
registery folders keys that I do not have. a repair of TechNet did not help.
I tried to register dte.olb again but got the same error that meant access
denied. I do have Office 2007 installed, and under XP I was aware that you
had to change the way you enter Boolean serches. NBD I'm used to it now. I'm
running Vista Enterprise SP1 now so the SP did not help either. TechNet still
refuses to load because of DTE.OLB. Any more ideas? I'm willing to try
antyhing at this point.
