Intrusive animated ads online
I don't know if anyone who can influence change at the magazine reads this,
but I sure hope so.
I often work on the road or from home and, when I do, it is often over a
relatively slow network. It can be either dial-up, depending on a hotel or
weather conditions or it can be my satellite Internet service - which isn't a
great way to do RDP anyway.
When I am on a slow network, the flashing animated advertisements on the
pages for MSDN magazine articles mean that opening those pages renders my RDP
session virtually useless and unusable. And I never realize it until after
choosing one of the wonderful MSDN articles from my search results.
Even at work, the flashing is a serious distraction and make the articles
hard to read.
Please! Eliminate the flashing and animations. The troublesome ads today
are for MSDN Magazine 2005 CD, VS2005 Launch DVD, and Dev Week 2007. These
could be effectively marketed with a simple colorful banner ad against the
blue/gray MSDN page.
It's not like these advertisements are going to win me an X-Box by clicking
the bouncing MSDN CD or make me a better lover. If they must change,
couldn't they change 2 or 3 times and then stop?
And on top of that, the MSDN home page even has an animated ad for
Expression Web. While the animation is the worst problem with the ad, it
seems rather pointless to advertise the product to developers since it has
been determined on high that developers have no need for, or interest in,
Expression Suite products.

RE: Intrusive animated ads online
I received a reply by email from the managing editor of MSDN magazine
suggesting I turn off the Show Animations option in the advanced settings of
IE.
Worked like a charm for animated gifs. Flash is still a potential problem
but all of the flash ads I have seen since making the settings change have
stopped animating after a few seconds. That I can live with.
Thanks, MSDN Magazine.
