The problem I am experiencing is that I have no sound on most email attachments that open with the media player, there is video but no sound but everything else is ok when cd's are played or other videos.

What's installed on your Mac?? WMP 9 or the FLip4Mac WMV codecs? Without knowing how the files yo receive are encoded it's hard to really know what's wrong, but it could simply be that the files use a codec not supported on MacOS X (like ACELP.net for instance). WMV is just a "container" format and multiple different encoding methods can be used to generate the content.
