downloading media player   
when I try to download WMP for my new Macbook nothing happens--only the text 
edit document opens. any suggestions?

It's a .sitx file/package, which needs Stuffit expander.

You can install the free version which works fine :
http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/system_disk_utilities/stuffitexpander.html


Or you might want to skip WMP altogether (it's discontinued and
unsupported on Mac) and playback in Quicktime using the well-supported
Flip4Mac codecs for Quicktime via
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/wmcomponents.mspx
