.avi to .wmv
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger)

I have been searching for software, of course I would prefer a free download, that would allow me to convert my .avi video to .wmv. I cannot find any software for mac. Do you have any suggestions or will I need to send it to a friend with a PC to convert ?

Thank you.

I haven't found a software that would do it for free.
Otherwise, you can use the Flip4Mac WMV codecs to do it (the paid
version, not the free one — the free one will only let you *play* WMV
files, not encode them). After you install the codecs, you can export to
WMV from most QuickTime capable application. If you want to work through
QuickTime, you'll also need a licence for the Pro version. Without it,
you could try other applications like MPEG Streamclip.

You can also try VisualHub. I actually like the application. I get very
good results with it and it is much faster than most other alternative
I've tried.
The user interface is fairly simply to understand, which doesn't hurt
;-)

They both have a demo mode. You should try them before making any
decision,

Flip4Mac make well regarded Quicktime components, for encoding and
playback of WMV, so you could try http://www.flip4mac.com/ (30 day
trial) and convert the AVI to WMV in Quicktime.

If you find it useful then presumably purchase it.

That would also I expect require you to have Quicktime Pro, which
you'd have to buy from the Apple store, unless you have better video
editing software (eg FCP) then the Quicktime plugin should just work
inside that.
