WMP is a standalone application. It doesn't affect Mplayer or NicePlayer in any way. If I'm not mistaking, NicePlayer is actually QuickTIme based. Mplayer, of course uses the mplayer project sources. WMP 9 is obsolete, buggy and officially abandonned by MS. MS themselves recommend using the flip4Mac WMV codecs. You can go back to the MS site and look for the WMV codecs for QuickTime. They are free and work fairly well. They add WMV and WMA support in all QuickTime-based applications. This should solve the problem for NicePlayer (and 'm not sure anything can be done for Mplayer to get it to read WM9 files - unless it can also use QuickTime for decoding).
