I'm a new-to-Mac user and i'm trying to view a .wmv file but i can't. I was told to download Windows Media for Mac, but after installing i need a program called stuffit but there's no freeware of it (not without a catch) Is there any other freeware program to open this compressed files?

Stuffit expander is freeware. I wouldn't waste too much time on all this though. MS officially abandonned WMP for Mac a few years ago and they now recommend that users use the Flip4Mac WMV codecs instead (free too). I drive a penryl Imac. Leopard. my thoughts, they are MY OPINIONS so don't sue me please... 1) download Firefox 3.0.1 from www,Mozilla.com/Firefox. GranParadiso is a similar program without the flaming icon but you will need Firefox. Then download from same site Add-ons-->Search Engines...scroll..choose all search engines add AOL search. 2) reboot 3) use AOL search tjo fine "stuffit free download" (these keywords!). Choose the 5th entryand navigate to the SmithMicro site. Goal-- v12.0.2-----hit the big green button. CHOOSE THE LINK ON THE LEFT. This will give you 15 days, free, you'll get a good link via email. While installing, be sure to assign all compressed formats to stuffit under "file mapping. as usual, be sure the program is in "Applications." move it from there to the toolbar. 4) have a celebration because now you can drag a .sitx archive like WMP9 to the icon and use the windows media player. If it doesn't work...well try something else...worked for me. Sorry microsoft. --gwm "Tato" wrote: > I'm a new-to-Mac user and i'm trying to view a .wmv file but i can't. gwmiller wrote: > Sorry microsoft. --gwm Microsoft probably doesn't really care. 1) they don't read these groups 2) WMP has been officially abandonned years ago and even MS now recommends using the Flip4Mac WMV QuickTime codecs instead (free, available on the MS site and doesn't require Stuffit). Problem with this Flip4Mac WMV codecs is that it doesn't support all content [yet], for example content with DRM. Support from Microsoft is very bad. They still offer their Windows Media Player 9 for Mac on their Mac-site and leave you high and dry after that. In the mean time I still have the same problem as the original writer and cannot view for example the Volvo Ocean Race TV [http://www.volvooceanrace.tv/page/Home/0,,12573,00.html] Has anyone come up with a solution? -- Scholte ""Corentin Cras-Méneur"" wrote: > Tato wrote: > > > I'm a new-to-Mac user and i'm trying to view a .wmv file but i can't. Neither does WMP9 actually (it only supports a completely outdated version of the WMP DRMs). > Support from Microsoft is very bad. Officially, WMP for Mac has been abandoned. > I still have the same problem > as the original writer and cannot view for example the Volvo Ocean Race TV > [http://www.volvooceanrace.tv/page/Home/0,,12573,00.html] Has anyone come up > with a solution? No problem whatsoever for me to play the videos I found on this site using the latest version of the Flip4Mac codecs...
