Entourage vs Exchange a fix for repeated logon requests?
Hi All,
For quite some time (since I upgraded to Leopard, I think) I¹ve been having
a problem accessing my company¹s Exchange server from my home office using
Entourage. I thought that the problem might be fixed with the advent of
Entourage 2008, but after installing the new software today, I have found
that it persists.
I have checked and rechecked my settings, and they are exactly what my IT
department told me to use. I also checked the information about this issue
at http://entourage.mvps.org/, and found that, while a lot of others are
having similar problems, none of the solutions listed there for this issue
resolved my problem.
I spent about 90 minutes on the phone today with Microsoft tech support,
trying new identities, new users and examining my account setup. However,
nothing suggested resulted in a solution. The tech suggested that I should
contact IT and have them reset my account.
What happens is that when I start up Entourage, it asks me for a password,
even though I have it set to save the password. Then every few seconds, it
tells me that it can¹t check the mail because the password or settings are
wrong and gives me a No/Yes choice as to whether I want to reenter the
password or not.
Here¹s what I have observed:
In my login keychain there is a record called Exchange. If I click Yes, in
the dialog mentioned above, it wipes out the password in that keychain
record. Then it asks for the password over and over as it updates the
folders in my Exchange account.
On the other hand, if I click No, it just stops the process and lists my
Exchange account as Not Connected. However, if I access my Account Settings,
where I can observe that my password is entered and the checkbox for Save to
Keychain is checked, and just click OK in that settings dialog, with out
changing a thing, it restarts the process of connecting to Exchange and
completes the process without any further incident. In this case, I have
observed that my keychain record for Exchange does not lose its password
setting.
So my observation is that Entourage is first asking me for my password
instead of looking for it in the keychain and then, if I answer incorrectly,
wiping out my Exchange password in the keychain and then asking for it over
and over.
Is there a fix for this problem beyond the simple work around I have
discovered?

Hi Caleb,
I read your entry. Hope someone has a suggestion for us.

Re: Entourage vs Exchange a fix for repeated logon requests?
Hi William,
Yes, I read about the hotfix, and the server admin had already applied it.
Unfortunately, it had no bearing on my problem.
In fact, my issue can be cleared on my computer quite easily, but it's just
annoying to have to do it repeatedly, day after day. Instead of retyping a
password, I can actually:
* select No in the dialog telling me mail can't be received,
* then access the Account Settings for my Exchange account,
* then just click OK and close out of the two windows.
Within a few seconds, the Not Connected warning disappears, and the account
functions normally again -- until the next occurrence. This process has to
be repeated sometimes 10 times a day, sometimes once a day.
On the other hand, if I click Yes in that original dialog about receiving
mail, then it wipes my keychain password and I¹m stuck retyping or pasting
it over and over, usually five to seven times per incident. I figured this
out by watching the changes in Keychain while the process was going on in
Entourage.

RE: Entourage vs Exchange a fix for repeated logon requests?
Hi Charles,
I had this same problem, and finally figured out the solution (just before I
was about to uninstall entourage). It's the stupidest thing.
Try changing your username from "username@domain" to "username_mail2w".
I'm not sure why this solves the problem. I know that in windows mobile 5.0,
you should use "username@domain", whereas in windows mobile 6.0, you should
use "username_mail2w". Obviously, Entourage is not the same as windows
mobile, but maybe something similar changed between wm 5 -> wm 6 and
entourage 2004 -> entourage 2008.
Who knows and who cares as long as it works. My windows machine was giving
me too many cryptic errors, so I finally bought my first macbook; my last
apple computer was an apple IIc. And literally, the only problems that I'm
having with it come directly from microsoft!!

Re: Entourage vs Exchange a fix for repeated logon requests?
Thanks for the suggestion. As I suspected, it was a problem that only the
Exchange admin could fix. They finally adjusted the settings on a "load
balancer" they use to optimize their operations. Now I have no problems at
all.
