dollar amounts auto-converted to dates--how to stop this?
Excel has just begun to do the following: if I attempt to enter a column of
figures representing dollar amounts, with one- or two digit amounts followed
by a decimal point and two places for cents, Excel automatically converts
them to calendar dates, including impossible ones (11.39 becomes 39 November,
for example).

I can prevent this by prefixing "$" to the numerals in each column, but if I
do this AutoSum refuses to add the column, so I want to stop the conversion
process before it starts.

I can find nothing in Autoformat or elsewhere to turn this off, and clicking
on "Help" now produces no results at all.

Can anyone tell me what to do?
