More Info: Sometimes changing the permissions like this makes it work: cd Library/Preferences chmod -R 755 ./Microsoft However most of the time I need to delete the Microsoft dir. Even if changing perms does work, I need to go through it again next time I reboot. Any thoughts ?
The Microsoft Component Plugin shows the version installed. Have you modified Office or used a workaround to install? I would reinstall: Quit all Microsoft applications (Easy way: log out/in with Shift key down to disable any startup items.) Drag the Microsoft Office 2008 folder to the Trash. Empty Trash. Reinstall Office 2008 from your original installation disk.
