Re: "Silent" crashes
Unexpected Quits while in use are typically symptomatic of lacking current
updates and/or needing to repair permissions. Office should be at 11.5.1, so
if it isn't that's the first step. Run AutoUpdate from the Help menu of
either program. Also confirm that OS X is at 10.5.4 and run the COMBO
updater from the Apple site if necessary.
Then run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions, shut down you Mac & see if
things improve when you start it up again.
