Embedded file in PowerPoint presentation   

I received a PowerPoint presentation created on Windows platform that has a 
couple of embedded Excel files in a slide.  I can double click the icon in 
the slide to open the Excel file on Windows platform but not on Mac 
platform.  The PowerPoint is 2003 or earlier and Mac Office 2008 on Mac 
10.5.4.  Can someone advise me how to open the Excel file in Mac Office 
2008.
