http://ac.turbine.com/index.php?page_id=367 1: We're pushing the expansion pack launch back. The new launch date is July 18. .... 2: I'm leaving the AC Team and Turbine. Today is my (Jessica) last day here. == Anyone not see that coming has been ignoring the general level of incompetence at Turbine for years. Poor testing procedures when they bothered to use them, inefective project management and lack of anything close to an overall vision. As to JM leaving, I don't know what she actually did for the game so I can't imagine it to be a great loss. JJC

Interesting though, I'll have to go look at those forums. I bet the vnboards has a few choice things to say about it. stef -- Change your views to respect the truth, not vice-versa.
Damn.. *I* wanted to rain on the parade but you beat me to it! :-P Suffice it to say I'm disappointed but not very surprised. Chris "John J. It looks so much better on the old resume. AC1 is a thing of the past, never to be resurrected. -- Randy

Hopefully you won't base your opinion on what you read on the VNBoards. Be kind of like buying a car based on what you read in PC Computing. "Stef" wrote in message news:d4blut$q13$1@iruka.swcp.com... > I bet the vnboards has a few choice things to say about it.
>They brough in some players for feedback, which isn't the same thing >as testing in my book. >JJC That's a form of quality testing. Most of the time betatests consist of finding bugs. I believe that bringing in players is a much tougher thing, because they are looking for playability issues, not necessarily bugs. And if something is simply... broken and must be tossed (even if it was coded with no bugs), it may take months to fix. stef -- Change your views to respect the truth, not vice-versa.

Stuff you wouldn't need player testers to find. Given the history of Turbine with internal testing it's not exactly a revelation. JJC

The only comment we really have to go on is in the article, which says something like "we were too close to it, to see how it was bad." I know what they mean. You can write a story or produce a movie based on a book, but because you have a priori knowledge of it, you might not deliver it well. Someone coming in and reading it for the first time would be lost. Remember the first Dune movie? It's a great example of how it was great if you read the first book, but crappy if you hadn't. I bet this is the same thing, but we'll find out when they drop the NDA. stef -- Change your views to respect the truth, not vice-versa.

Ibn said "I can't get into specific detail, but they ran the gamut from game balance, to non-functioning systems, to client stability." I don't care how close you are to your baby but non fuctioning and unstable clients is easily visable. Given the utter lack of anything close to competency in the internal testing procedures that is the culture of Turbine. Go find the gamasutra article about the post mortem of AC and the problems they listed in detail there are exactly the ones that could be said now. Nothing has changed. JJC

Nothing has changed. >JJC To their credit, there's one difference: this didn't get released. When blizzard delayed the release of... diablo2? people rallied behind them. Disappointed, yes, but happy they weren't rushing out buggy code. The days of release buggy code now and patch later are gone. I remember reading the old AC devteam leader (can't remember the name) had a sign over his office that read "ship or die", and ship they did. And patch. And patch. But they got the stability down pretty well after a few months and nobody really worried much, because this was so new. Today, this technique won't be tolerated. stef -- Change your views to respect the truth, not vice-versa.

It's still tolerated. It was their lack of proper testing that prevented this from happening. Any bets on how long the patch will be come July if that is the real release date? Any bets on how long the last major bug will last before a patch? Ship and patch is alive and well. JJC
