I had already deleted the folder and registry instances of
conflict.1 and .2. Removed everything heartbeat from the
registry, d/l the cab from fsl. something url. The first
three tries this morning I got the install essentialgames
dialogue box followed by whoops :-(( Been to the zonesysops
site, cant figure out how to d/l the full zone install
program. Their faq addresses the heartbeat problem but does
not appear to provide a solution, its obviously not self-
correcting in this case.
My best guess is it is (somehow) diretly related to
upgrading ME to XP pro as opposed to a clean install of xp.

I've seen mention of that before, but if I remember correctly, it was a
problem with the signup, not the install of Heartbeat.
Maybe something here:

Here's what I would try:
Delete all the Conflict folders, in Regedit, press F3, type in \conflict
and, when located, press Enter. When one is located, and if it mentions
Heartbeat, click, then delete the "folder" in the _left_ pane that is
currently opened. Press F3 to continue the search.
Now, shift/right-click the link below, and Save As Heartbeat2.cab to the
Desktop, or wherever.
http://fdl.msn.com/zone/datafiles/heartbeat.cab
Then explore to the Zone's Temp folder, arrange the window where you can
drag Heartbeat2.cab onto the file Zextract.exe, and release. That
_might_ install the files for you.
You could just use a Zip program to extract the three files to the
C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files folder, but then you'd probably have
to register the component:
Click Start, Run, type REGSVR32 Heartbeat.ocx
...or right-click Heartbeat.inf, click Install.
Something here should work..

Re: No Heartbeat - Object Always Damaged - Failed to Download Errors
Hi, I just tuned in to this thread as I have been desparately combing the net
for help on resolving this same issue with the MSN Game Zone. I have tried
everything I can find to get the zone to work with no luck.
WinXP Pro, SP2
Linksys BEFVP41 Router
4 User accounts (Mine is adminstrative)
I'm trying to play the CDRom Game Risk II and I own it. I have tried
deleting the heartbeat control and I've removed every instance of a
"conflict", "heartbeat", "hrtbeat" or "zone" entry in the regisry that I
could find. Whenever I go to the zone, I get the message "failed to download
http://fdl.msn.com/zone/datafiles/zextract.exe. If I try again, I get "An
incomplete Zone installation was detected. To correct this problem: click
OK, close and restart your browser, and return to the zone. (Reason: Zproxy
Failed.)". Trying a 3rd time give me the same error with "... (Reason:
ZSetup Failed.)". Then I get the "Unable to launch room ...." message.
I have also tried to download the files manually to my computer and get the
installation started but that doesn't work either. Finally, I tried the
suggestions of creating a new administrative account and installing and also
trying a different location for the installation. I also tried installing
with the router bypassed so I had a straight connection. None of this has
worked.
Can anyone provide some insight and an approach to getting this resolved
once and for all?
Please Help.

Re: No Heartbeat - Object Always Damaged - Failed to Download Errors
What process did you use to check for and remove conflict folder?
I'll explain a little bit about what heartbeat is, the files it uses, where
it's located, and how to remove it.
Zone.com uses a browser 'plugin' ActiveX control called Heartbeat. The zone
uses this control to communicate from your computer to the zone servers..
It must be able to start successfully before ZoneFriends will load and
before you will be able to enter any game lobbies.
The Heartbeat ActiveX control is actually 3 files: heartbeat.inf,
hrtbeat.ocx, and zsetup.exe
It can be viewed by going to Control Panel- Internet Options- and clicking
on the Settings Button- then 'View Objects'
It may be showing as damaged or as string of characters like this..
AE1C01E3-0283-11D3-9B3F-00C04F8EF466 if so, right click on the control
(HeartbeatCtl) or any of the above mentioned files and select remove.
If the heartbeat control was found to be damaged now or previously you
should check for Conflict.x folders in C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files.
Because if these folders are present and are not removed the software can be
caught in a loop to where Heartbeat cannot be installed correctly, even
after you just removed it from View Objects.
To check for and remove conflict folders, Click on your Start button and
then selecct 'Run'.. In the Run box type command.com and press enter. In the
DOS prompt window type cd c:\windows\downlo~1 and press enter
then type DIR and press enter..
If you find folders titled Conflict.x type the following for windows xp.
Rmdir /s Conflict.x (swapping the x here for the number of the conflict
folder listed) then press enter.
Repeat this step for each Conflict.x folder listed (1,2,3, 4 etc) and then
type Exit and press Enter to close the command prompt when all are removed.
You can then reboot your machine and return to the zone to try to install
the control again.
Also when ever installing software from the internet that you know is safe
to download.. Disable your anti-virus programs and firewalls until the
download is complete.
Often anti-virus programs will edit the download if it trys to scan the
file.. and be patient, interupting the download could result in installing a
damaged heartbeat.
Heartbeat must be allowed to communicate with the zone servers at all
times.. almost all features of the zone are controlled by it.. including
opening lobby rooms and ZoneFriends, . If you have a firewall not allowing
this control to run problems will arise.
