Visual SourceSafe Server on a DSL line
We've got a server with Visual SourceSafe on the LAN and another server that
allows VPN connections. The server with the VPN connection is on a DSL line
(1.5 / 384k). A user has a wireless connection (?? / 128k) at home. When
this server was plugged into a T1 line, things worked slow, but smoothly for
him. On the DSL line he will lose the connection after using Visual
SourceSafe. Rebooting the DSL modem fixes the problem, for a time.

On the one hand, I'd think that the 384k DSL line is the problem, but if he
only has 128k up, that should be the bottleneck, I would think.

How much bandwidth does Visual SourceSafe need over a VPN connection? Is
there anything else I should be looking at? Is this even the right place to
post this?

Thanks,
Dan

Re: Visual SourceSafe Server on a DSL line
Dan:

Visual SourceSafe Explorer wasn't really designed for any type of non-LAN
connection. It relies on Windows NetBIOS routines which can be very
chatty when talking to the file system. This might explain some of the
problems you're seeing.

You may want to take a look at other tools which allows access to the VSS
database. This would provide a more stable environment when using VSS'
explorer for your operations

SourceGear SourceOffsite is one such tool.

See "How can I access Visual SourceSafe over the Internet?" in this link

Re: Visual SourceSafe Server on a DSL line
I was under the impression that with SourceSafe 2005, things were much better
and it was working on a T1 line fine.

Re: Visual SourceSafe Server on a DSL line
Dan:

I don't believe that is entirely correct.

There is an Internet MSSCCI plugin which works within the Visual Studio
IDEs, but these are limited bound projects within MSSCCI supported IDES
(not the entire repository), and only allow a handful of operations -
checkout, checkin, history, (move and rename for later VS IDES) - to name
a few.

AFAIK, in VSS 2005, other operations will still require VSS Explorer
which is limited in its connectivity in this regards.

Getting back to your original problem. What type of VSS client is the
end user using to access the VSS database? If you're using MSSCCI within
an IDE, have you configured / tried out the Internet based MSSCCI client?

Re: Visual SourceSafe Server on a DSL line
We're just using the built in VSS client in Visual Studio. I'd have him try
the internet based one, but the server is a private server and,
unfortunately, we only have one public IP which is being used for webmail.
Is there a way to change the port that the internet VSS client and server
use? I could port forward that and see if that works.

Thanks,
Dan

Re: Visual SourceSafe Server on a DSL line
You could try installing the VSS Web service on an IIS Server, configure
IIS for a different port of your choosing.

As for the Internet based MSSCCI VSS client, I honestly don't know if
that supports other ports. You'll need to do some research to see if the
port can be entered on the VSS login dialog.
