Source Safe 2005 allowing edits without prompting for checkout
Hi,

I am using VSS 2005 integrated with Visual Studio 2005 for a web site
developed in Visual C#.

I've set the On Edit dropdown box under Checked-In Item Behavior in
the Source Control environment settings to Prompt For Checkout.
However whenever I make an edit without checking out an unchecked out
file, I am never prompted to checkout. As I recall, with this setting
any attempts to edit an unchecked out file should require me to
checkout the file. As it is now, it is very easy to accidentally start
making edits on a file I haven't checked out, then when I attempt to
check out the file, I can't be sure that changes haven't been made to
the file while I was making edits, and I'd rather not mess around with
merging.

What could be wrong?

Thanks,

Crazy

Hi,

Being able to edit the file doesn't necessarily mean that you're
getting an automatic check-out (especially after you've verified the
setting).
Do this:
- Do a "Get Latest Version" on a file that you know you haven't edited
- In Windows Explorer, check if file's Read Only attribute is checked.
If it's not, then you'd be able to edit the file and get a warning
during subsequent check out that you have a writable version.

There is a setting that you can double-check
VS2005-ToolsMenu-OptionsMenu-SourceControlNode-PluginSettingsSubNode-
Advanced Button-LocalFiles tab-Use Read Only Flag for Files That are
not Checked out checkbox

But most of the times I've seen what you describe happen regardless of
this setting... it seems to be some kind of bug during "Get All..."
It was happening a lot under VSS6.0c/d w/ InterDev.
Much more rarely under 2005 versions.

That did the trick. Thanks! Don't know why that flag had been turned
off -- I wasn't experiencing this on earlier projects using VSS 2005.

Thanks,
