RE: Installing and moving to server version of sorucesave
WenYuan,
Thank you for the reply. I managed to post this without finishing the
question.
I need to know is there is some how-to information on installing the server
version of sourcesafe and moving projects to it from other installs. I am now
using visual studio sourcesafe 2005 and will need to move the database to a
server and allow mulitple users.
Thank you,

RE: Installing and moving to server version of sorucesave
WenYuan,
Thank you for your reply.
I don't know which version of sourcesafe I should be using. That is the
first question I need answered. We are using Visual Studio 2005 professional
for development. and need to use the correct version of sourcesafe for that
product. There will only be 3 developers. I need to know which version of
sourcesafe server to use and how to set it up.
Thank you

Re: Installing and moving to server version of sorucesave
It's simple. There is no "server version". SourceSafe is a client
application that may access a shared database.
Make a directory on the server. Give the 3 users Change permissions
Create a share on the server pointing to the directory. Give the 3 users
Change permissions
Copy everything in the directory where your srcsafe.ini is (and all
subdirectories) from your workstation to the server directory you created.
In your SourceSafe client, choose the File / Open SourceSafe database menu
entry. Navigate to the server and share created above.
Select the srcsafe.ini.
You are now using the server database.

RE: Installing and moving to server version of sorucesave
Hello Jerry,
Thanks for Bryan reply.
I agree with Bryan. There is no "Server Version" of SouceSafe. It's a
client application.
The Team Foundation Source Control which I mentioned before is a new
feature of Team Foundation Sever. But it is not suitable for 3 developers'
team.
If what you need is to move the database from current developing machine to
the server, you may just copy VSS database to Server directory. ( as Bryan
said )
If you need create a new database on Server machine, you can also install
VSS 2005 on the server by the following document on MSDN website.
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms181050(VS.80).aspx
[How to: Install Visual SourceSafe on the Server Machine]
Then, give sufficient permission for each user. For detailed information,
you may refer to the following article.
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms181068(VS.80).aspx
[How to: Set Share Permissions for a Database]
At last, on your SourceSafe Client, you can navigate to the srcsafe.ini
file in the shared folder on the server.
Hope this helps, please let me know if you face any further issue or there
is anything unclear. We are glad to assist you.
Have a great day,
Best regards,
Wen Yuan
