I believe it's questionable whether compiled HTML Help (.chm) is an obsolete 
format because, even though it has been in "maintenance mode" for a few 
years now, Microsoft has not announced any plans to discontinue it. Even 
WinHelp (.hlp) is still a workable format, although the need for Vista users 
to get the WinHelp engine (WinHlp32.exe) from the Microsoft Download Center 
before they can view WinHelp files is obviously a disincentive.

That said, there are a number of shareware tools available that can convert 
help files to PDF, DOC, and other formats. For example, you may want to try 
the demo versions of these converters:
