Problems with Visual Source Safe 2005 and Http
I've been trying to install this on a Windows 2003 Server
with .NET 1.1 and .NET 2.0 along with the latest
Web Service Extensions.

VSS installed just fine but I can't seem to get http enabled
for my database. I made the folder sharable in windows
explorer. Whenever I try to open the database with
a UNC path and set it to be available over http, it
always just says that it can't set up IIS to work with
VSS. Nothing specific, just says it can't set it up.

Typical freaking Microsoft error message.

Who was the bright one at Microsoft that thought this
was acceptable?

I've read some blog posts that talk about it requiring
the default web site. Well, I followed some security
advice a long time ago and removed the default web site.

I'm not crazy about trying to edit the metabase manually.

Can anyone shed some light on how to get this crap
working? I can't believe the MS boys and girls
would have tied this to requiring a specific site id
for an IIS site.

I didn't expect to have this much problem installing
source control software...

Re: Problems with Visual Source Safe 2005 and Http
Hi Robbe,

Actually, VSS2005 Admin can only enable the VSS service on the default
website (id==1).
You either have to edit the xml metabase file to rename the website ID to 1
if you want to use VSS Admin to enable the VSS Service (see here how
http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=64494&SiteID=1), or to
enable the web service manually (and this page might help
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms230398(en-US,VS.80).aspx)

Re: Problems with Visual Source Safe 2005 and Http
The second link looks like a winner. I'll give that a shot.

Question for the VSS folks, if I can do this manually,
why doesn't the administrator tool do this for me when
it can't find a siteid=1?

Hello? Microsoft Innovation?

Or lack of time to support a scenario not many users need....
