HELP!!! Vista CTP 5270 hangs when installing on Dell Inspiron
I'm having a heck of a time trying to install Vista build 5270 on my Dell
Inspiron laptop. The machine has the following characteristics:
- 3.04 GHz, 2 GB memory, 60 GB 7200 rpm drive So, this should be plenty of
horsepower.
I have tried the following scenarios [using the ISO image from the MSDN
subscriber downloads]:
- ISO burned to DVD, booting from DVD [both connected to the net and
disconnected]
- same DVD, but running from within XP
- same ISO, mounted using the XP virtual CD persistent mount
They all end up either hung [for hours] on the Completing Installation
screen, or they come up with a message "Install is taking longer than
expected, but will complete soon..." - which it never does.
One thing with my laptop, even when installing XP Pro, I have to manually
install the Dell device drivers for the Broadcom 440 network and NVidia
display. Could this be why the install is hanging?
How long should this take? And, if anyone knows what might be the problem,
I'd love some recommendations [that I haven't already tried].
Thanks [and, Merry Christmas],

Re: HELP!!! Vista CTP 5270 hangs when installing on Dell Inspiron
I have seen Vista install in about 1hour Intel 3.2Ghz 1G of memory AtiX600
video card, 40G harddrive (Custom built machine for Vista). No problem
expect that it will not detect the card as tuner. It may have to do with
the Dell Hardware but not sure will look.

Re: HELP!!! Vista CTP 5270 hangs when installing on Dell Inspiron
As another test, I decided to create a Vista Virtual Server image - figuring
it was a hardware problem with the host machine. It worked. It's slow -
even with 1 GB RAM allocated for the guest and 1 GB RAM for the host, but it
works. My guess is I won't be able to use my laptop directly as a vista
machine until we get some bits that support upgrading from XP SP2.
Thanks for checking, though. I guess I'll just still with XP SP2 for my
WinFX playing.

Re: HELP!!! Vista CTP 5270 hangs when installing on Dell Inspiron
Bob,
You are probably hitting a bug in Broadcom driver which manifests itself
when the machine has more than 1GB memory.
See:
https://connect.microsoft.com/feedback/ViewFeedback.aspx?SiteID=4&FeedbackID
=13566
I am looking for the updated driver too.
Regards,
Matev.

I have got the same problem with my Inspiron 6000.
Specs are almost the same as Bob.
I tried to open the link you posted to the microsoft connect site but
it gives an error.
So I could not read what is on it. It says it is already in use by
someone else.
Matevz, would disabling the broadcom Nic in the bios be the trick ??
Thnx

Re: HELP!!! Vista CTP 5270 hangs when installing on Dell Inspiron
Bob,
I disabled the Nic in the bios and the installation of Vista was done
in 40 minutes.
The Intel wireless is supported in Vista so I use that one instead of
the broadcom onboard.
Another solution is to put the string maxmem /1024 in you're boot.ini
after that you can enable the broadcom nic and it will also work.
thanks to Matevz.

Re: HELP!!! Vista CTP 5270 hangs when installing on Dell Inspiron
Very cool, thanks! Just so I'm clear, did you simply:
- disable NIC
- boot from DVD
- reformat
- install ?
thanks

Re: HELP!!! Vista CTP 5270 hangs when installing on Dell Inspiron
OK. It appears to be getting alot farther along, so I'm hoping this is just
taking a while. It seems to have gotten almost completed, but has been there
for a while (i.e. about 2 hours). It is still responsive (i.e. mouse and
hourglass move), but there's no DVD or harddrive activity.
Is there any way to tell what may be going on - or, if I end up stopping it,
getting any log to know what it may be hanging on?
Thanks again for all previous and any future help,

Re: HELP!!! Vista CTP 5270 hangs when installing on Dell Inspiron
If setup is taking longer than expected, 5270 will tell you so. There should
be somehing in the line of "Setup is taking longer than expected. Please
wait." And no, I'm not kidding.
:)
It's just too funny.
In your shoes I would remove all RAM beyond 1GB, turned off the NIC and WiFi
(if Broadcom) and install. Then I'd go slow.

Matevz.

Re: HELP!!! Vista CTP 5270 hangs when installing on Dell Inspiron
I'm all to familiar with "taking longer than expected" message. It was funny
the first time, but is old now.
I have now turned off both LAN and WiFi in the BIOS - will see how that
goes. If that doesn't do it, then I'll try removing one of the 1 GB SIMMs
and try again. I hope I can re-add the 1 GB after the install is done -
otherwise, it's not with it to me [I'll go back to a WinFX XP SP2 box for
now].
Thanks for the continued help,

Re: HELP!!! Vista CTP 5270 hangs when installing on Dell Inspiron
After disabling both the onboard LAN and WiFi, it installed rather quickly.
I began playing with things, and I can enable the LAN, but not the WiFi on my
Inspiron 5150. The WiFi [for some reason] is causing the boot sequence to
hang - even after Vista is installed. I just now have to figure out how to
get the broadcom drivers installed - either a Vista download or maybe the
existing XP ones.
I'll update after I get it worked out in case anyone else is having the same
pains. As for RAM, the 2 GB seems to be fine.

Re: HELP!!! Vista CTP 5270 hangs when installing on Dell Inspiron
Well...back to XP SP2 for now.
I can't enable the wifi, nor can I get an NVidia driver for this CTP, and
broadcom 440 isn't supported - at least from all searches I checked. The
thing keeps locking up on me after just a little playing around (i.e.
bringing up task manager, changing the sound, etc.). I don't know if it's
because I don't have network capabilities or have a good video driver
installed, or what. I unfortunately don't have a standard desktop machine to
put this on, and I really need to do WinFX dev - as opposed to playing with
Vista. I want to do both, but the WinFX dev is critical for me.
If anyone hears of any updates to some of these driver problems, please let
me know.
Thanks
